Piedmont Regional Jail is the adult local-jail route for a Lunenburg arrest or local sentence. It is operated by the Piedmont Regional Jail Authority in Farmville. A release from its booking can mean bond, recognizance, time served, sentence completion, dismissal-related release, or a transfer. The last category matters here. PRJ reports a mixed population that includes local and state offenders as well as people held under U.S. Marshals contracts. Leaving the PRJ roster therefore does not establish that a person went home.
Community release ends the PRJ confinement, though a court case or supervision may continue. A transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections ends the PRJ placement but starts or continues state custody. Movement to another jail has the same limit. Virginia FOIA generally calls for production or a statutory written response within five working days, subject to lawful extensions and exemptions. Charges may reflect actual access, search, and duplication costs. Juvenile, sealed, medical, victim-identifying, and protected investigative material follow different access rules.
Piedmont Regional Jail Release Hours
PRJ announced a specific release-hours limit effective July 21, 2026. Under the facility notice, offenders will not be released between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., regardless of reason. This narrows the possible public release window, but it does not promise that a person will walk out at 7:00 a.m. Court processing, a hold, transport, records work, and facility operations can still change the actual time.

The notice is most useful after an affirmative release order or verified status exists. It should not be used to estimate an interagency transport, and no source says that every transfer follows the same public-facing schedule.
Piedmont Regional Jail Release Geography
PRJ describes itself as Virginia's original regional jail. Its history is more than local color because it explains why a Lunenburg County jail search points outside the county. Member counties entered their agreement on January 1, 1986. The institution later transitioned to an Authority on January 1, 2017. Today it serves Amelia, Buckingham, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward Counties.

Lunenburg Correctional Center is a different institution. It is a VADOC state prison in Victoria, inside Lunenburg County. Similar geography and names often send a search to the wrong locator. Piedmont Regional Jail Federal Transfers
PRJ states that it houses contracted U.S. Marshals offenders. That fact does not turn the regional jail into a federal prison. It does mean that a federal detainee can disappear from the PRJ current-custody result while remaining confined under federal authority. The local release record should be checked for a receiving agency before anyone treats the roster change as community release.
The U.S. Marshals Service does not provide a public release locator like the Bureau of Prisons. Follow the federal court case and use the USMS records request route for appropriate prisoner tracking records. If the person enters a BOP institution, use the BOP inmate locator. A result marked “RELEASED” with a past release date confirms that BOP no longer holds the person. “IN TRANSIT” does not mean release, and even a BOP release does not rule out supervision or another custodian.
No current PRJ immigration detention contract was established. ICE's locator is relevant only when a record gives a concrete reason to suspect an ICE transfer. A PRJ exit to ICE would still be a transfer of custody, not an ordinary community release.
